HISTORIA

images_dolanski.jpg

Images of/from Enlightenment, eds. Dariusz Dolański, Anna Janczys, s. 220, B5, oprawa broszurowa,  ISBN 978-83-7842-048-4, Zielona Góra 2013, 25,00 zł

In 2010, a network of nine European research institutes was founded as an initiative of the University in Potsdam, which embarked on a mutual interdisciplinary project on European Enlightenment in global context, labelled as ENGLOBE. Enlightenment and Global History. This publication contains fractional outcome of the research, which was conducted by the participants of the project in the framework of four workgroups concentrated on the issues of: Knowledge, Perception, Values and Evolution. The researchers of the Enlightenment not involved in the project were also invited to participate in the publication.
The Enlightenment was a period in the history of Europe, which, as none other, has left its mark on its present identity, providing the foundation for the modern state, economy and science, granting a new meaning to the notions of nation and man, but mostly bestowing individuals with their inalienable rights. Also, the Enlightenment attempted to regulate the relationships between particular states in a novel manner. These ideas proved to be partly successful in the 19th century, then found their expression in Europe and North America, then succeeded in making their way towards the 20th century and finally found their ultimate expression in the great project of cooperation and coexistence between the previously conflicted nations, i.e. the European Union. This project was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012. Out of Europe, the Enlightenment and its ideas then commenced their global march which became a point of reference for social transformations and universal observance of human rights in the countries of Latin and South America, as well as in Asia and Africa.

Notions of the Self. The search for identity in the East Central Europe in the 18

notitons.jpg

Notions of the Self. The search for identity in the East Central Europe in the 18th century, eds. Dariusz Dolański, Agnieszka Pufelska,  s. 198, B5, oprawa broszurowa, ISBN 978-83-7842-018-7, Zielona Góra-Potsdam 2012, 35,00 zł

This volume is a result of nearly 10-year-long academic cooperation between the University of Potsdam and the University of Zielona Góra in the area of research on the 18th century and the Enlightenment. Researchers of the period from other academic institutions in France, Ireland, Russia, Poland and Belarus, which remain in cooperation with the two abovementioned universities, have been invited to participate in this particular project.
The volume contains studies of the eighteenth-century history, particularly in the context of the Enlightenment, concerning the area of widely comprehended East-Central Europe, from Silesia in the west to Russia in the east, and from Poland in the north to Slavonic territories in the south. These studies are chiefly related to the eighteenth-century knowledge, self-image and the depiction of the outside world, as well as to the perception of this area from the perspective of the West. This central focus is accompanied by deliberations on the formalisation of intellectual life, as well as on social structure and mobility.
In spite of thematic diversity, it is nonetheless possible to isolate the particular areas of interest that are featured in all articles in one form or another, and as such, they bind them into a larger whole. These are mainly the notions and myths conceived in the minds of the inhabitants of the territories of East-Central Europe about their own history and their historical presence in Europe. The ever-growing tendency to “construct” one’s own historical awareness by means of creating the image of the enemy is clearly discernible in the 18th century. Such a function was typically ascribed to the neighbouring countries which in the world of the European Enlightenment were regarded as intellectually backward or politically insignificant. These negative models often served as admonition and as such, allowed for positive interpretation of home-grown developmental designs. Poland, which typically came across as “anarchic” and internationally weak, frequently constituted such a pejorative point of reference. Popularization of negative images of individual countries had the additional intense influence on the formation of internal historical knowledge, as well as on the manner of comprehending, experiencing and reconstructing one’s own history, which both created new historical knowledge and was its natural consequence. Accordingly, external opinions of critical character were met with positive interpretation of own internal historical patterns.

Physics and applications. Quantum optics I

Physics and applications. Quantum optics I, ed. Wiesław Leoński, s. 238, B5, oprawa twarda, ISBN 978-83-7481-477-5, Zielona Góra 2012, 29,00 zł

Quantum optics was born in the first years of the 20th century. The first papers leading to further ideas of quanta of light were presented by Max Planck and Albert Einstein. Their pioneering papers laid the foundations for the theory of quantum optics. However, one should remember that for the birth of the formal theory of quantisation of light, the development of quantum mechanics was necessary. Interestingly, the word ’photon’ appeared for the first time in a paper by a Gilbert Lewis, a chemist, in 1926 and was later used by P.A.M. Dirac, a physicist, the next year. The modern sense of the term quantum optics was established in 1956 when Hanbury Brown and Twiss built the intensity interferometr and performed their famous experiment in which correlations between two light beams were measured. Although the results of their experiment could be explained on the basis of the classical theory of light, with some quantumcomponent to the process of photodetection, their result is commonly accepted as the beginning of the modern quantum optics era. The next milestone in the development of quantum optics was the invention of laser in 1960. The physical properties of the light generated by lasers were considerably different from those characterising the light generated by classical thermal sources. This fact was a great impulse leading to further development of quantum optics’ ideas. The first of them were presented in the fundamental papers written by Glauber, describing new states of light quantum coherent states.

ICT in Education Desing. Processes, Materials, Resources, Vol. 2, ed. Eunika Baron-Polańczyk, s. 156, B5, oprawa broszurowa, Zielona Góra 2012, ISBN 978-83-7481-480-5, 25,00 zł

The considerations are initiated by an article introducing the subject-matter that constitutes the central focus of the publication, i.e. the process of designing in the context of computer-aided creative educational activity. In this context, it analyses the definition, scope and properties of designing; the process of meeting expectations in the aspect of purposefulness of the undertaken endeavours; solving problems from the point of view of creation of ideas and creative success, as well as the process of designing in the context of computer-aided education. It indicates methods of conception that condition ‘creative success’ and it also identifies efficient (praxeologically: practical, capable and economical) procedures to be undertaken in the process of designing materials and didactic resources. Two parts have been isolated in the publication. The first part focuses on social/cultural and educational aspects, whereas the second part rather emphasises the engineering/technical aspect of the analysed phenomena. Each article (constituting a separate chapter) has been written according to the same structural pattern, i.e.: introduction, subsections, conclusions, bibliography, as well as an abstract and a short note about the author. The monograph addresses problems related to designing of the didactic/ educational process, to multimedia didactic materials and to ICT infrastructure and resources. Thus, it is meant to target all these readers who are interested in practical, efficient and economical application of ICT methods and tools in broadly understood education. The problems presented in the publication may prove useful not only to researchers of the subject-matter, but also to students and teachers who are interested in introducing new technologies into their professional practice.

Jej głównym celem jest transmisja kulturowa w przestrzeni kulturowej człowieka w aspekcie kształcenia (nauczania, edukacji i wychowania), rozwój osobowości, łączność jednostek i grup z kulturą – inkulturacja (edukacja w zakresie wyboru świata idei, wartości, świadomości społecznej, obrzędowości). Szczególne znaczenie ma wychowanie fizyczne w okresie progresywnego rozwoju dzieci i młodzieży, przygotowując młode pokolenie do pełnienia w przyszłości nowych funkcji i ról społecznych. Mam nadzieję, że zamieszczone w monografii prace będą inspiracją do podejmowania nowych badań auksologicznych w różnych środowiskach związanych z ochroną i promocją zdrowia.

Conditons for Biological and Motor Development in Various Periods of Ontogenesis

Conditons for Biological and Motor Development in Various Periods of Ontogenesis, red. Józef Tatarczuk, s. 168, B5, oprawa broszurowa, Zielona Góra 2011, ISBN 978-83-7481-418-8, 25,00 zł

W ostatnim stuleciu obserwujemy nagromadzenie dużej ilości nowej wiedzy w zakresie nauk medycznych, antropologii, antropomotoryki itp. Kolejne artykuły omawiają badania longitudinalne rozwoju biologicznego dzieci i młodzieży w Polsce (R. Asienkiewicz), a także zjawisko trendu sekularnego w odniesieniu do dzieci i młodzieży zamieszkałej w okolicach Moskwy (M. Negasheva). Z kolei A. Wandycz i wspł. przedstawiają skutki zachwiania biologicznego rytmu dobowego zakłócanego pracą dwuzmianową. Przekrojowy i mocno zróżnicowany charakter powyższych opracowań przybliża różnorodne aspekty omawianej problematyki i stanowi niewątpliwie jego zaletę – gorąco zachęcam do lektury.

Black Theological Intra-racial Conflicts in the Novels of Toni Morrison

lobodziec_black.jpg

Agnieszka Łobodziec, Black Theological Intra-racial Conflicts in the Novels of Toni Morrison, s. 140, B5, oprawa broszurowa, Zielona Góra 2012, ISBN 978-83-7481-463-1, 29,00 zł

Dr. Lobodziec has produced an excellent work. It is interdisciplinary, quite complex, theoretical, accessibly written, and steeped in a deep grasp of a wide range of books and articles. An additional impressive characteristic of her writing is her profound grasp of the inner nuance and refined texture of black American and USA cultures. Such an accomplishment would be challenging even for a “native” scholar. Yet, it is striking how skillfully she succeeds, even though her primary social location is Poland. Moreover, her methodical and deep interrogation of the particularity of African American experiences (in black theology, womanist theology, black literary criticism, and Toni Morrison’s novels) has implications for a larger conversation for America and, indeed, for western culture. Finally, she could have simply stayed at the level of deconstruction. That is to say, she could have left us with her engaging and artful unpacking of the adverse social and personal structures within African American religion and literature. Such a book would have made a contribution. But, instead, she offers the reader an array of scholarly solutions to the problematics elaborated on throughout her text. Dr. Lobodziec’s goal is an inquiry into intra-racial conflicts in Toni Morrison’s fiction. To reach this aim, she yokes together the disciplines of black theology and black literary criticism. In her critical argument, these are natural analytic partners. Both carry out hermeneutical practices of black cultural expressions. Black theology interprets black religion; black literary criticism interprets black literature. Both investigate the black community and black folk culture. Both pursue the traces of liberation in African American life. And these common concerns of both disciplines are mirrored in Toni Morrison’s novels. A reader will find that this is a tight thesis substantiated by a convincing rationale. Dr. Lobodziec’s text is quite scientific. (1) She employs theoretical contributions from a host of disciplines. We discover insights from historians, sociologists, black theologians, psychologists/psychiatrists, religious studies authors, womanist theologians, literary critics, and, to a certain degree, political scientists. (2) The scientific value of her work is further enhanced by the objective and rational approach she takes in studying her subject matter. (3) This theoretical approach is deepened by her multi-sided look at her project. (4) Scientifically speaking, she weighs the pros and cons and competing oppositional perspectives on a topic. And (5) she takes the reader seriously by offering an abundance of evidence for her thesis. … In conclusion, by deploying black theology and Toni Morrison’s work, perhaps one of Dr. Lobodziec’s major accomplishments is that she broaches a discourse crossing cultures, communities, countries, and continents: How does one take seriously the self, the family, and the broader community?

English Literary Translations into Polish until 1800

Agnieszka Kałużna, English Literary Translations into Polish until 1800, B5, oprawa twarda, Zielona Góra 2011, ISBN 978-83-7481-442-3, 32,00 zł

As the book attempts to show, theory met practice to the degree that a particular translator allowed for it.Interestingly, success in translation could be seen in a vast array of possibilities depending on individual translators’ approach and their courage to take risks where conformists would not dare to do so.
The present study attempts to introduce the views on translation of prominent 18th century writers, and to demonstrate, on the basis of samples, to what extent theory was applied in practice. The samples are carefully analysed and conclusions are drawn. The whole work consists of two parts, presenting all the information necessary to convey the theoretical background to 18th century translation studies.Chapter 1, after a brief account of the history of translation up to the 18th century, covers a spectrum of opinions on translation as advocated by the most distinguished representatives of the epoch (both Polish and English).Chapter 2 concentrates on the practical dimension of the study and reveals portraits of subsequent renditions which are analysed in the light of 18th century theoretical translation guidelines. The earliest translations from English into Polish are carefully analysed to establish whether given translators succeeded in reconciling both theoretical requirements and their natural geniuses. The findings of the research are based on relevant examples presented in the book. Each masterpiece is accompanied by original samples and illustrations.Chapters 3 and 4 present the 18th century poetry and drama translations supported by relevant examples.Chapter 5 focuses on culture-bound elements in the selected 18th century translations. The final conclusions allow us to form a wider picture of 18th century translations by juxtaposing all the examined literary works and their translations with the theoretical requirements, thus contributing to greater objectivity in the final commentary. The conclusions contain my individual comments, with particular emphasis on the dominant translation strategy preferred by a given translator.Attachment includes biographies of famous authors and writers whose works were used for the purposes of this research.
It is my hope that the theoretical and practical material as well as the resources presented in this book will serve as a useful reference which will encourage further research in the field of translation studies. At the same time, perhaps some of these stunning masterpieces will be rescued from oblivion as we carefully take them down from the top shelves to wipe away the dust.

The reviewed work represents a weighty voice in the discussions on the shape and effectiveness of road safety education, on the basis of comparison in Poland and Slovakia. […] The book’s theme steps into the wide and attractive, but also multi-faceted area of life of everyone. In compiling work on reflections on education for road safety, the authors of the book did not omit essential elements of broadly conceived mental, social and moral, patriotic, aesthetic and health education for children and adolescents. They point agreeably to significant importance and possibility of educational influences of young people throught appropriate class activities, extra-curriculum activities and out-of-school activities – in the idea of safe road traffic…
[Prof. dr hab. Jan Grzesiak]

The authors of the reviewed monograph collected and analyzed in detail the current situation of road safety education. However, they did not fokus Orly on the description of the existing situation, but they were also looping for possibilities for streamlining this process. Both authors agreed that a diable way is to use information – Communications Technologies and special multimedia teaching aids. These are introduced in the part of the Polish author according to the offer of the Polish national Ministry of Education and the Slovak author presents his own teaching aid. This monograph as a whole offers inspirational views on the issue of Road Safety Education in Poland and Slovakia.

Criminal Justice Response to Trafficking in Human Beings in Poland

Z. Izdebski, J. Dec, Criminal Justice Response to Trafficking in Human Beings in Poland, s. 108, B5, oprawa broszurowa, Zielona Góra 2009, cena: 15.00 zł.

The late 1980s and the early 90s were characterized with significant changes on the geopolitical map of Central and Eastern Europe. The period of system transformation in Poland brought not only political changes. Apart from their positive effects, the political and economic changes in our country impoverished a large part of our society. This affected Poles' standards of living. Economic hardships, growing unemployment, shortage of opportunities of improvement of life, unstable labor market situation, all this made people migrate westwards with hope for better lives. People felt lost in the new circumstances and they were not able to adapt to them; many a man lost their jobs and it was hard for them to find a new one. Poverty causes some pathologies. Among other things, poverty make more and more people leave their country without being aware of the hazards that they may face there. Some of them become victims of trafficking in human beings.
Unaware of the threats related to illegal labor recruitment, without any knowledge about the conditions of living and work abroad, especially women are posed at the risk of becoming victims of traffickers in human beings. They are sold and, then, forced to work in sex business, for which they do not receive appropriate remuneration. The present problem of trafficking in and smuggling of human beings is, among other things, the result of opened borders of the former communist countries.
Since the early 1990s the problem of trafficking in people has been permanently growing in Poland. Due to its geographical situation, Poland has three functions in the process of trafficking in human beings. It is the country of origin of the victims, a transit country (people from Eastern Europe are being smuggled across the territory of Poland), and the destination country in the process of trafficking in human beings.
After its accession to the European Union, Poland may take the role of Germany. It will become a buffer country from which people will be distributed all over Europe. Strengthening of the eastern border shall bring the problem underground, and foreigners will be even more "illegal" in Poland.
As a research team from the Institute of Social Pedagogy, Counseling and Social Education Unit, we have been examining the issues of trafficking in human beings for a long time now. Our activities are primarily related with observation of the phenomenon, attempts to describe it, and preventive actions.

The English Department of the Institute of Modern Languages at the University of Zielona Góra has been involved in numerous academic events and publications concerning, among other things, linguistics, translation and language acquisition.
The prezent volume reflects our interest in these areas. It contains articles of distinguished authors working abroad (Mary Besemeres and Anna Wierzbicka, Eleanor Rosch, David Singleton and Paul Nation) as well as colleagues developing thier academic interest in Poland. Such a collection of articles popularises scientific contributions of acknowledged linguists and enables an exchange of thought in the academic society.

The methodology of logopaedics is located at the borderline of two disciplines: philosophical knowledge manifested in the methodology of science and knowledge in the area of logopaedics. The methodology of logopaedics is a specific academic discipline since logopaedics is an academic discipline and its research methodology constitutes an element of general research methodology.
Does logopaedics have good research methods: undoubtedly yes, and the case study, commonly used in other areas, is one of them.
Case studes are generally accepted as basic methods of clinical analysis, including the logopaedics analysis. The method, despite numerous descriptions of efficient practical application, has not been described yet from the methodological pint of view.

C. L. Van, P. P. Goldstein, A Concise Course in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, s. 140, B5, oprawa broszurowa, Zielona Góra 2008, cena: 19,00 zł.

While talking to our colleagues physicists about modern methods in nonlinear partial differential equations (NPDE) we were often asked for a handbook which could lead into the heart of the matter without the details not directly related to solving. But there were no such books. Evidently the competent authors were reluctant to pay the cost of depth and insight for such a direct approach. And so were we. But the situation made us change our attitude.
In 2005 we were asked to give a series of lectures on NPDE at the Vinh University, Vietnam. The audience was bright and full of commitment but their mathematical background was modest and they had to make an effort to understand the lectures in English. To make their learning more effective, the English lectures of one of the authors (P.P.G.) were followed by classes conducted in Vietnamese by the other one (C.L.V.). As the whole course lasted from 22 to 31 August 2005 (a scarce 24 hours!), there was no time for any extras. We concentrated on the methods which seemed to be most adequate to integrable physical systems.

Learning a foreign language is an activity human beings have been undertaking since antiquity. Alongside this activity we have been developing our knowledge of mechanisms beyond this learning. By formulating and addressing questions, researchers contribute to our understanding of such mechanisms. One such question is the issue of how a second language can affect thinking and associations. This is a very timely question in the European context because the societies which are coming closer to one another not only need to communicate but they also inevitably affect each other's perception of reality. Language is one of the vehicles of this influence. This is not a new area of study and I myself have already attempted to demonstrate (Kuczynski 2003, 2005a) that changes in thinking (instantiated by the associative direction) caused by an L2 are observable in advanced learners, but there is a need for a more in-depth exploration of the phenomenon. This is the challenge this work undertakes: to examine how various factors, such as the learner's proficiency, personal experience and the kind of meaning involved, affect associative processes in bilinguals.

The goal of this work is to contribute to the improvement of the generic development process in product lines engineering, i.e. for software product families. The work integrates the best (in the opinion of the author) parts of the given state-of-the-art, and contributes some new aspects to the process. Some aspects of this presentation include topics like variability modeling, handling variability and feature modeling, especially extending feature models with feature weights and fuzzy description for variable features. For modeling requirements the use of a specialized feature model for modeling features in UML is exemplified in the e-Commerce domain. Another contribution is the proposal of modeling flexibility with feature models as shown in an example of Web services and the introduction of a version-based approach for feature models. All suggested new capabilities and methods are integrated to provide an improved framework for the development of product families. For the fulfillment of the generic system architecture the generative techniques like frame technology are recommended. This supports reuse in the evolution and maintenance phases of system family members.

This work focuses on the learnability of lexical items in a foreign language, background knowledge being an essential factor in what can be learnt and how. Background knowledge is understood here as the conceptual and schematic content of a subject's cognitive resources (extralinguistic background knowledge), his/her native language with its potential for transfer (part one of linguistic background knowledge) and the already existing knowledge of the target language (part two of linguistic background knowledge). I explore the compatibility of the properties of lexical items with the properties of such components of background knowledge. In other words, by background knowledge I understand all the cognitive resources that the learner can mobilise for the demands of a new learning task. I first present an overview of the issues discussed in the literature (Part One) and then I address experimentally those areas which, as far as I am aware, have not received a satisfactory amount of researchers' attention (Part Two).

The EU enlargement on May lst, 2004 by inclusion of other European countries, Poland and the Czech Republic among them, was just a crowning act of the political changes and adaptation processes that have been progressing for morę than two decades. It was a very important turning point for the new Member States and has had a great impact on the life of their citizens, predominantly in Central and Eastern Europe. Although the practical effects could already have been observed, the introduction and realization of the union regulations and free-market rules in the new Member States is in fact a long-time process which is still taking place. In the sector of building engineering - which is of concern herein - new stimuli have appeared that result in a lot of changes, mainly in its economic and technical aspects.
These new stimulating circumstances might have been expected to be particularly advantageous to the development of the bordering regions in the triangle of the Czech Republic, Germany, and Poland, owing to the easy mutual influence and direct contact between people and companies. However, the resulting changes have turned out more complex and convoluted. Having been on the peripheries of the financial and decision-making centres, these border regions have proved to be less attractive to new investors than expected, and this is to a large degree due to their incompatible road and industrial infrastructure. Many initiatives have been undertaken to activate and support an eąualise rapid economic growth of the bordering regions. The project Three Countries Innovation Push - 3 CIP within the INTERREG HIC Eastern Zonę Initiative promotes a transborder co-operation of the German Federal States: Saxony and Brandenburg, the Czech Districts: Karlovy Vary, Usti, and Liberec, and the Polish Provinces: Dolnośląskie, Lubuskie, and Wielkopolskie. Morę about the 3-CIP Project can be found on the website http://www.3-cip.com.
This book is an outgrowth of the conference Innovation in Building Engineering which was organised within the 3-CIP Project and held at the University of Zielona Góra in Zielona Góra on February 25*, 2005. It has a special character by reflecting the wide rangę of different aspects and conditions of the building engineering in the triangle of the border regions of that time. Over a hundred participants from academia and industry of the bordering regions took part in the conference. Ali the included papers are based on the presentations which were delivered at the conference.

In Österreich leben zur Zeit ca. 8 Mill. Menschen.

This volume initiates the article series which will come out on a regular basis under the common heading Language, Thought and Education. Its general, yet challenging intent is to explore and possibly clarify the overlapping intricacies of human cognition, language and L2 acquisition/teaching mechanisms. Since the framework of our series requires fathoming a vast array of topics, we plan to publish articles written by experienced theorists and researchers as well as by junior authors working in a relatively wide range of disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, cultural studies, SLAR, ELT and the like.

This book is an attempt to negate thinking about education only in terms of steering the child, correcting his/her imperfections or following the curriculum standards, often decided outside the child or even against his/her development. Instead of this the authors suggest some solutions inspired by different theoretical assumptions and the new paradigm of thinking about the logic of personality and identity development as isomorphic with the logic of society development. Instead of the conservative, technocratic and affirmative thinking pattern, the solutions apply critical, emancipative and communicative thinking.

The increasing prominence of computers has led to a new way of looking at the world. This view sees nature as a form of computation. That is, we treat objects as simple computers, each obeying its own set of laws. The notion of a Cellular Automaton (we will write CA for brevity) extends this analogy to provide a way of viewing whole populations of interacting cells, each of which is itself a computer (automaton). By building appropriate rules into a CA. we can simulate many kinds of complex behaviours, ranging from motion of fluids governed by the Navier-Stokes equations to outbreaks of starfish on a coral reef. Why has this transformation taken place? First, there is the simple matter of practicality: desktop computing power has reached a level at which it is quite feasible to simulate individuals as they move across a landscape, interact, reproduce and die. Second is the issue of the language: for many practitioners, rules encoded in computer algorithms are much more accessible than the formal mathematical language of dynamic systems. Third is the awareness that the simple models traditionally used in ecology, physics or process engineering have not always proved very successful in accounting for phenomena observed in real systems. The simulations have their own intrinsic interest; they can be a valuable aid in defining and characterizing the processes involved and can lead to the discovery of new and interesting phenomena.

The theory of N-F networks is based on the theory of fuzzy inference (Zadeh, 1973). The difference between fuzzy systems and neuro-fuzzy systems is mainly in the formal representation of the system structure and the methods of tuning the parameters. The neuro-fuzzy system is viewed in the form of a topology similar to the topology of the neural network, there are no equations describing the inference mechanism and there is no list of rules - these elements of the fuzzy system are coded in the form of elements of the network (Rutkowska, 1997; Korbicz and Kowal, 2001). Of course, it is a simple transformation and it does not change the properties of fuzzy inference, it is only another form of realization for the fuzzy system. The crucial difference between fuzzy systems and neuro-fuzzy systems is in the algorithms used to generate the rule base.

All challenges and global problems of contemporary world manifest themselves in various proportions on Polish ground. The map of objective, external processes is additionally superimposed by an intricate pattern of our own internal preconditions, mostly concerned with procedures of the implementation of democratic order and mechanisms of free market economy. On top of the two sources of factors there are also endogenous conditions rooted in the state of education, which experienced multiple perturbations in the course of post-war history of Poland. It was never successfully reformed and continually suffered from insufficient funding. At the same time social and economic expectations towards education have continuously been growing, especially now after the accession to the European Union.

Selected Essays on the Condition of Polish School in the Process of Social Change

Structural transformation inevitably leads to corresponding social changes, particularly apparent in the system of education. The changes are effected both by governmental structures inexorably willing to exercise control over educational processes, and by the reąuirements of pupils, parents and teachers.
A holistic analysis of the system of education reveals its character, prominent features, as well as the directions and the pace of its development. How-ever, it may also reveal the limitations instituted by particular expectations towards the outcome of every mid-stage of the process. It also becomes apparent that the character of the process in Poland's educational system bears striking similarities to other systems in the spheres of social values, promotion of ideas and organizational solutions.
The fifteen or so years of economic development applied after political transformation constitute a representative period for liable estimation of results and achievements. Such assessment reąuires at least two reference points: the situation at the start and the situation in other countries undergoing the same processes.
Yet, however valuable and reliable the estimation may be, it may notsuffice for the unfailing analyses of pedagogical value, governed in the eyes of a pedagogue by its individual dimension. Therefore, the intentions, the form and the scope of social conceptions will always, in result, affect the individual child, youth or adult submerged in institutionalized formations. Conseąuently, it is the individual attitudes, personalities or simply values, shaped according to socially accepted directions, that will constitute the real outcome of the transformational process.

Using a natural language usually takes place with the purpose of communicating a message of some kind. The content of the message consists of thoughts or/and intentions which are meant to be understood. Understanding by the recipient of the message takes place after processing the linguistic data, providing that the processing is successful and the encoding sufficient for this purpose. It goes without saying that, for this to be possible, the speaker must be the first to understand his own message. This raises no objections as far as the statement is confined to this generality: the encoder understands his message before the decoding party. Common sense would also appear to suggest that the encoding party understands his/her message before actually encoding, that is - s/he first knows what s/he wants to communicate and then undertakes to translate his/ her thoughts into the language code.
